A Bite Inspired by… Kids Baking Championship (TV Show):
Cake in a waffle iron. That’s right– stop what you’re doing. This is BIG. This Black Forest Waffle Cake is one of the best things that’s ever happened to dessert at my house. NO JOKE! With only 4 simple ingredients, you can create a decadent, incredibly delicious waffle cake that looks like breakfast, but tastes like dessert! Making cake in a waffle iron is genius because 1) it’s way faster than baking it and 2) it creates a moist interior and a crispy exterior that’s downright addicting. Thanks Kids Baking Championship for the delicious inspiration!

I also love the food network and watching the kids compete is so cute and fun. They really come up with fun challenges, and I like your take on this one! It looks DELICIOUS! And I like the shortcuts involved because I’m all about quick. And cake in a waffle maker? WHAT? Love it!!
Alyssa says
Thank you so much, Alison! Always glad to hear from a fellow Food Network lover! 😉 My favorite thing about this recipe is definitely how quick it is. It’s just too delicious to wait for! 🙂

Haha. The kids on Masterchef Junior put me to shame. It’s absolutely humbling to watch them.
This is a great idea. I love the idea of the layers of crispy outside and the nooks and crannies to hold the filling. If there are no kids around when I make this, I think a nice drizzle of kirsch wouldn’t go too badly here either. Fun!
Alyssa says
Thank you so much, Romain! I love your “adults only” variation– you always have such great ideas! Hope you enjoy! 🙂

I love that show, too, and so do my kids! I can normally never get my cakes to turn out right, but this looks totally do-able! I’ll have to try it.:)
Alyssa says
Thank you, Riva! This recipe is SO easy and completely foolproof. I promise, you’ll have no trouble at all. Plus the kids will have a great time helping to put it together. Enjoy! 🙂

Pint-sized bakers. Bahahahaha. I love the food network too! And this waffle cake??? Holy smokes. Looks like the perfect Saturday splurge brunch. (The only acceptable meal where you can eat cake and call it breakfast. Or is that every meal???)
Great photos!
Alyssa says
Thank you, Mikaela! This cake is definitely the perfect excuse for a splurge brunch. It looks like breakfast, so why not? 😉 And, I have to admit. I’ve had cake for breakfast before, so this definitely isn’t too far of a stretch. Feel free to enjoy it anytime! 🙂
Marie @ Yay! For Food says
I am with you with the loving The Food Network! It is constantly on the TV when we are at home! The kids on the Baking Champion show are so fun to watch! Anyway, I LOVE the idea of eating dessert for breakfast and I LOVE black forest cake. This is much easier to put together (4 ingredients! Yes!) and it looks so impressive too!
Alyssa says
Yesss!! All food bloggers love Food Network. It’s kind of our thing– am I right? 😉 Thanks for stopping by, Marie!

OMG Alyssa! Where has this waffle cake been all my life? It looks so fa-reaking good I can’t even take it right now! PS, I spend way too much time watching Food Network. . .must be a blogger thing 🙂
Alyssa says
Haha totally agree, Kelsie! It’s definitely a blogger thing. If my posts about Food Network have taught me anything, it’s how much food bloggers are inspired by their shows. Glad to hear I’m not alone! 😉 Thank you so much!

I still need to buy myself a waffle maker, and this recipe is that push to finally get me out the door to buy one. This is such a fantastic idea haha! Such a clever and interesting way to have black forest flavours!! I absolutely adore this!! 😀
Alyssa says
Thank you, Joyce! I didn’t have a waffle maker either before this recipe and, now, I’m obsessed! It’s just such an easy appliance to get creative with and it’s provided me with tons of new inspiration (stay tuned for more waffle recipes in the future!) Thanks again for stopping by!

What a fun idea! This is such a colorful cake – love that you went for the waffle iron approach here, too!

Thank you so much, Ashley! The waffle iron makes a beautiful cake in less than half the time that baking takes. What’s not to love? 🙂 Thanks again!
